50!

As of yesterday evening I got my (first) character to level 50!

That makes Star Wars: The Old Republic the second MMO (not counting Guild Wars) in which I've reached maximum level (the first one being Age of Conan).

Here are some other facts about the number 50 (and the year 50) that you might not know:

  • 50 (fifty) is the natural number following 49 and preceding 51.
  • 50 is the smallest number that is the sum of two non-zero square numbers in two distinct ways: 50 = 12 + 72 = 52 + 52. It is also the sum of three squares, 50 = 32 + 42 + 52. It is a Harshad number.
  • There is no solution to the equation φ(x) = 50, making 50 a nontotient. Nor is there a solution to the equation x - φ(x) = 50, making 50 a noncototient.
  • The aliquot sum of 50 is 43 and its aliquot sequence is (50,43,1,0). Fifty is itself the aliquot sum of 40 and 94.
  • 50 is the atomic number of tin.
  • 50 is the fifth magic number in nuclear physics.
  • In Kabbalah, there are 50 Gates of Wisdom (or Understanding) and 50 Gates of Impurity.
  • 50 is the traditional number of years in a jubilee period.
  • There are 50 states in the United States of America. The TV show Hawaii Five-O is so called because Hawaii is the 50th state.
  • 50 years of marriage is the gold or "golden" wedding anniversary.
  • Year 50 started on a Thursday (same day of the week as this post).
  • Year 50 was known as the Year of the Consulship of Vetus and Nerullinus (before Anno Domini became in use in the early medieval period).
  • In year 50 Cologne was raised to the status of a city.
  • In year 50 Romans learned to wash themselves with soap.
  • In year 50 the Dutch city of Utrecht, where I got my university diploma (a bit later), was founded.
  • In year 50 the Romans built the (first) London Bridge across the Thames out of wood.
  • In year 50 the African Great Lakes were discovered by the Greek explorer Diogenes.
  • In year 50 Cai Lun, Chinese inventor of paper and the papermaking process, was born.
  • The Asterix comics are all set in the year 50 BC.

So you can see that the number 50 is quite a distinguished one and I am proud to add my characters level to that accomplished list.

Happy New Year 2012!

Happy New Year!

I nicked the above image from the Internet somewhere, but I thought that it was appropriate enough. Not only is it the new year, but The Old Republic has been officially released for (almost) two weeks now. This makes 2012 pretty much the year in which we get to officially play BioWare's massive Star Wars MMO. The start of a new saga.

Since I've been away pretty much exactly since launch I haven't kept a close eye on the news. But I have been scanning headlines (and storing news messages to read when I get back) and from what I can tell everything seems to be going quite well for the game. The launch seems to have gone incredibly smoothly with the worst thing being some queues, and everywhere people seems to be much enjoying the game (again, based mainly on scanning headlines). In general I've got the feeling that The Old Republic is set to do quite well in 2012.

For now though, enjoy the New Year's celebrations. Enjoy the fireworks if you are somewhere that people light them (they don't seem to do so where I am in France). Enjoy your time with your family and enjoy the champagne, but remember to drink responsibly. And let's all work to make 2012 the best year yet.

Back from UK Community Event

Just a quick post; I'm back from the community event and, despite being a bit dazed (and thus completely forgetting to properly thank the developers), quite enjoyed my experience playing the game. I will write up a full post detailing my experiences, but it's going to take some time. Right now sleep is more important (as I've got work again as normal tomorrow).

At the very least though I want to thank Stephen Reid, Daniel Erickson and all the other guys and girls from BioWare for setting up and running the event, and for giving us the opportunity to experience Star Wars: The Old republic first hand. I'm very glad that I managed to get an invitation. So thank you.

Stay tuned for my full report of my hands-on with the game.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

A bit early, but that's because I'm off on vacation tomorrow morning and won't be back until January. So here's a Yoda Claus to celebrate:

Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year. And remember, 2011 is the year that should see Star Wars: The Old Republic's release (along with a number of other big MMOs). Either way, it's promising to be a good MMO year. Maybe it'll make up for the rather lousy MMO year that 2010 was (pretty much the only good thing, in my book, was the large number of MMOs switching to a 'Freemium' model).

And see you all after the Fireworks; I'll do my best to catch up on all the SWTOR news when I'm back.

Happy 2010!

Happy New Year, everyone!

I'm still on my Christmas vacation, should be back sometime late next week, but I wanted to wish you all a happy 2010.

Away for a couple of days

I will be away the next couple of days to celebrate my grandmother's 80th birthday. So during that time I obviously won't be able to report on any news.

This means I'll miss Comic-Con and anything that comes out of it as well. But I'll do my best to report on anything from it that I can find when I get back on Tuesday.

As for this Friday's update, it is said to be a Fan Friday. While Fan Fridays can contain some nice things, there usually isn't that much to report on.

Take care and will be back next week. :)

Personal Monumental MMO Week

This week has been a monumental MMO week for me.

I’ve been playing MMOs for years (for about six-and-a-half years now if my calculations are correct). But last Sunday was the first time ever that I reached the level cap in an MMO* when I got to level 80 in Age of Conan. Thanks so much to my wonderful Sisters in the Dark Desires guild for helping me bridge that last gap (by tackling the Onyx Chambers together).

The last Monday I finished my Destiny quest line in Age of Conan. This quest line starts when you first create a character (and wash up on the beach of Tortage) and ends with this quest you can get at level 80. The first twenty levels are spent almost completely on this quest line (particularly Night Time Tortage) and probably one of the most enjoyable quests in an MMO, giving some glimpse what BioWare’s fourth pillar of story could do in an MMO. After you leave Tortage you get a few more Destiny quests at certain levels (at levels 30, 50, 60 and 80); the level 60 one in particular allows you to finally get rid of that tattoo you’ve got since the start.

And then last Monday the finale of that in the last quest, defeating the Grim Grey God, which is by no means easy (more difficult for some classes than others; as a Bear Shaman I’ve actually got it quite easy). After some minor quests you end up in the Soul Chamber which acts as sort of a giant ‘puzzle’ mixed with tough combat. And I admit I looked up what to do beforehand, and got lots of advice from my wonderful Sisters, or it would’ve taken forever. You need to know pretty much what to do when to have a chance to win, and even then it can be tough.

But I did it, meaning I’m pretty much done with levelling.

Of course it doesn’t quite end there, as the story does go on. After defeating the GGG you still have to take care of the sorcerer behind it all. But that’s done in the form of end level raids, which leads me neatly into my next personal MMO landmark.

Because last Tuesday was the first time I ever raided in an MMO. I’d signed up for a raiding alliance a week or two before, seeing the end in sight and wanting to be ready. Though I admit that it’s mostly because several of my guild’s members are in it as well (our guild is too small to do raiding ourselves). We actually did three raids in sequence (three different Tier 1 raids). And I was extremely lucky since I got not one, but two epic drops for my class. Or rather there were two drops for my class and the only other, more senior, player in the raid already had both items so he let me have them. Now I’ll have to do a lot of raiding just to get the points to pay for them.

For the rest the raiding was quite enjoyable; at least far more enjoyable than PvP (which I very strongly dislike for various reasons). Though it felt a bit like “repeatedly beating on the same target(s) over and over again until it does” it actually helped that there were lots of other spawns around the boss as well as well as other things happening that requires everyone to adjust what they’re doing. Though I can see it as being extremely frustrating to wipe as well and the whole things of synchronising your schedule with 23 other people, “planning your life around the raid” as one might say, is a big problem. I definitely wouldn’t want it to be the only thing to do and would love to have some small group and even single-player ‘raids’.

Because I’ve noticed that the main difference, besides the large group of people and epic drops, with normal repeatable dungeons is that you have to dynamically adjust your behaviour based on what happens. If spawns appear you have to fight those before returning to the boss, and the boss might do things that have you reacting. This would go well with single-player (and small group) ‘raids’ as well. But I think that instead of having one big boss to beat, better would be a dynamic situation with continual streams of enemies, keeping you on your toes. In fact, something along the lines of the final Destiny Quest would work quite well. I’m curious to see what, if anything, Star Wars: The Old Republic might be doing there.

In the end though it’s not really the raids themselves, or even the epic loot, but rather the people you play with that make the raids enjoyable. And I’m not altogether convinced that such a large group is truly the best for that. It’s generally easier to connect and have fun with a smaller group of people as you tend to be more personally involved with each of them. And it’s a lot easier to schedule time together with a small group (while I enjoyed the raid, I enjoyed last Sunday in the Onyx Chambers with my Sisters a whole lot more).

For the rest my MMO life has been fairly busy last week. Been trying some Free Realms beta (though it’s released now) which is surprisingly enjoyable for a free game. You just run into the “must pay money to get more” limit rather quickly and a lot of the mini-games are very simplistic (there’s combat, but don’t expect too much depth) or just annoying (trying to find a number of items in the world at a set, and quite tight, time limit with no indication of where to look is annoying, particularly if after running down the area a dozens of times you still haven’t even found one). Also got into another closed beta for an MMO that I’m not supposed to talk about; have only had time to try that one once. But this coming weekend should be better.

Then there’s some roleplaying events that are being planned (another Derketo Gathering, want to do another Acceptance Ceremony to officially accept some members into the guild, got some Sisters at Battle events coming, want to do some more of these high-level dungeon runs with the guild, etc). And I haven’t even finished Fallout 3 or Prince of Persia (which I got at a 50% discount during GDC from Steam) yet next to having a number of television shows to catch up on. All of which is a luxury problem, of course. Then there are a couple of very close friends that I want to spend time with more than any of all of the above.

So I’ve been fairly busy and it looks like I’ll continue to be for quite some time. But I wanted to make this post to mark the monumental MMO week I’ve had. And if you scoff and laugh because these things have become so mundane to you, then try to remember the first time that you reached maximum level, or the first time you went raiding. Or maybe even just the first time you played an MMO.

Perhaps then you’ll understand why I indulged myself a little with this blog post.

* Not counting reaching level 20 in Guild Wars since it uses a slightly different system where the first twenty levels are done in a few weeks and pretty much just one big tutorial for the main game after. Besides, I never did finish (or even start for that matter) the Ascension quest (which officially marks you ‘graduating’).

Clone Wars: Diathim

For a while now I've set my heart on playing a force-sensitive twi'lek, once Star Wars: The Old Republic is released. But thanks to the Clone Wars cartoon (that I just watched another episode of) I think I might change my mind on that. One thing I'd like even more would be to play a Diathim. Maybe as a force users or, if BioWare includes some kind of Republic Senator class, as one of those.

So yeah, I'd like to play an angel. So sue me.

Of course, the chance that they'll actually include the alien species at all (let alone as a player species) is quite small. They're a very minor species that only appeared once (in the cartoons) and for the rest is only mentioned a couple of times. But one can dream, right?

I'd still be very happy to play a twi'lek.

Back from vacation

Alright, I'm back again. Had a wonderful, relaxing vacation; three weeks of reading, watching movies, playing games and not doing much of anything. Loved spending time with my family, particularly my four-year-old niece who, though cheeky, is an absolutely adorable cutie. And though I'm sad that it's over, I must also say that I'm kinda happy to be back home again.

I'm sure that I'm very behind on all the SW: TOR news and it'll likely take a while to get up-to-date (particularly since I've got a lot of other stuff to catch up on too). But I'll do my best to continue posting any news and such I find regarding SW: TOR.

And Happy New Year; hope it'll be a wonderful one.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Alright, a bit early perhaps, but tomorrow early I’m going on vacation and thus won’t be around for a while (and thus won't be posting any updates). I’ll be spending most of the Holiday season with my family in my parents’ second home in France, hoping to relax most of that time. Reading, watching movies, playing some board games perhaps, just unwind and enjoy myself.

Unfortunately they don’t have anything better than dial-up over an old laptop there, so I won’t be online much. But to be honest I’m rather looking forward to spending some time away from the computer.

So I wanted to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy start to 2009. I’ll be back around the tenth of January. And watch out with fireworks.

Welcome

Welcome to Moon Over Endor. This is a blog dedicated to Star Wars: The Old Republic by BioWare and (role)playing in general.

Since BioWare announced this MMO a week ago it's been on my mind a lot. So far I've always greatly enjoyed BioWare's games more than any other and generally enjoy playing MMOs as well, though usually only for a fairly brief time before the game gets tiresome. As such I'm quite excited about BioWare making an MMO, one in the Star Wars universe no less. However, I also do have a number of concerns that I hope to get into later.

The biggest thing to swallow will likely be that this won't be what Star Wars Galaxies was supposed to be, which is a shame. But maybe, just maybe, BioWare will manage to lift their MMO above other MMOs in the same way that they've lifted their single-player games above other single-player games.

And hence why I'm here and why I'm starting this blog.

So I bid you welcome; we're going to be in for a wild ride. :)
