I agree that the best way is to ...@Scarybooster...

I agree that the best way is to give suggestions and perhaps that would've made a better post (catch more flies with honey and all that, though I never understood why one would want to catch flies in the first place). The thing is though that the official forums are already full of suggestions, a number of which quite well reasoned. I'm sure that at this point BioWare has seen about all of them. But I agree, going over a number of suggestions would've been better.

@Kirksville Eats...

I don't think that Campbell's Hero's Journey requires that the setting be fantasy (or even that it include magical and/or supernatural powers). Manipulating the world with your mind doesn't scream "wizard" to me, it screams "telekinetic". if they threw fireballs and teleported and turned invisible and turned people into sheep with their spells then that would scream "wizard". I'm all for calling a spade a spade, but this isn't a spade, it's a pickaxe. ;)

I'm also not convinced that it's entirely about keeping genres separate and more that the term 'wizard' doesn't quite fit in Star Wars. In Babylon 5, for instance, I'd probably be just fine with that name for a class (in fact it'd probably be one I'd want to play).

I do at least agree with your last point though. ;)Ayanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13537754337752995833noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7816501027034309987.post-28875555022912719322010-08-27T18:17:06.998+01:002010-08-27T18:17:06.998+01:00I'm not as outraged as many people seem to be ...I'm not as outraged as many people seem to be over the Wizard name. Star Wars follows Campbell's Hero Journey formula, with mentors and mystical boons. Call a spade a spade. Jedi manipulate the world around them with their minds; this screams wizard. I understand that people like to keep their science fiction and fantasy genres separate, but the archetypes are still the same regardless. Still, I do hope Bioware recognizes the community's strong dislike of the name and tries to make changes. They have to know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'emShane's Worldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03326206879973468828noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7816501027034309987.post-57744956593123258082010-08-25T22:49:19.661+01:002010-08-25T22:49:19.661+01:00It's not necessarily lore that makes the namin...It's not necessarily lore that makes the naming upsetting, it's (as Ayane pointed out in the posted rant) how out of place it feels in a science fiction universe where magic has no place outside of superstition.

What would be a better name? Something that showcase their skill with the force without invoking high classical fantasy tones.

Try "Force Adept", for instance.BakaMatthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07118099921349368320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7816501027034309987.post-55331592841474119362010-08-25T03:48:20.008+01:002010-08-25T03:48:20.008+01:00I understand people are upset with the names, but ...I understand people are upset with the names, but the best way is write suggestions. Blogs are very important to BioWare, maybe you should suggest some names that have a better lore meaning? I'm not much of a Star Wars lore person, so I wouldn't know where to start.Scaryboosterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17791243265440602798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7816501027034309987.post-5689689881555463762010-08-24T16:33:01.728+01:002010-08-24T16:33:01.728+01:00It might be a placeholder, but BioWare has always ...It might be a placeholder, but BioWare has always said that they don't release something unless they know it's ready. And they've announced this name in several places now. For the rest, while I kind of agree with you on the two S-names, I'll have to respectfully disagree on the Powertech name. :)Ayanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13537754337752995833noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7816501027034309987.post-57985212282370419642010-08-24T16:27:47.543+01:002010-08-24T16:27:47.543+01:00"Wizard" has to be a placeholder. There ..."Wizard" has to be a placeholder. There is no way they're going live with such a ridiculous sounding name. I don't share as much animosity with the rest of the lineup - "Shadow" and "Sorcerer" don't exactly roll off the tongue, but I can buy them. And I actually thought "Powertech" sounded neat for a powerhouse tank sort of Bounty Hunter.BakaMatthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07118099921349368320noreply@blogger.com
